Reef Group are delighted to have been selected as Developer for this exciting new project at the heart of Oxford City Centre.
Collaborating with Architect’s UrbanR, Reef Group have a strong track record of working within sensitive city centre locations, alongside listed buildings and within conservation areas.
Whilst working in such environments analysis of context is fundamental in the development of all design proposals. This enables a detailed understanding of the character of the local neighbourhoods, their urban grain, the significance and opportunity of key views and the historic context of the site. Based on this detailed analysis a bespoke design response is generated, which responds directly to its location and surrounding context, thus resulting in a scheme which feels inevitable, whilst enhancing the local environment by building on characteristics in common with the area.
Our Oxford Experience
Implementing this design methodology in 2018, Reef Group completed their Oxford Preservation Trust award-winning mixed-use development at 4-5 Queen Street within Oxford’s Central University and City Conservation area. The infill building sensitively addresses the crossing of Queen Street and St Aldate’s at Carfax Tower in the centre of Oxford. A new stone facade has a set back copper-clad top storey that has a fragmented form designed to provide visual interest and an appropriate scale of roof scape to the building within its wider urban context. On St Aldate’s, the existing listed elevation has been retained and a new refurbished set of student rooms inserted behind it, above newly refurbished and expanded retail accommodation.
